Recalling his recent visit to Sikkim for the golden jubilee celebrations, Modi said the affection and hospitality extended by the people of the state would remain unforgettable.

‎“This occasion comes at a time when Sikkim is marking 50th Statehood Day celebrations. A few days ago, I had the good fortune of being among the people of Sikkim for the celebrations. The warmth I received in Sikkim will remain a part of my memory,” he wrote.

‎The Prime Minister also reaffirmed the Centre’s commitment to supporting Sikkim’s development in the years ahead.

‎“The Central Government will keep supporting Sikkim’s growth trajectory in the times to come,” he added.

‎Sikkim became the 22nd state of India on May 16, 1975, after a historic referendum led to the abolition of the monarchy and the merger of the former Himalayan kingdom with the Indian Union. Since then, the state has earned recognition for its environmental initiatives, organic farming practices and sustainable tourism model.

Bordering China, Nepal and Bhutan, Sikkim also holds strategic significance for India. Over the years, the state has witnessed steady improvements in infrastructure, connectivity, healthcare and education, aided by central government initiatives focused on the development of northeastern and Himalayan regions.

The 50th Statehood Day celebrations have highlighted Sikkim’s transformation over the past five decades, with leaders emphasising its unique cultural heritage and growing role in India’s development story.
